BIM Models

Building Information Modelling (BIM) as defined by the Governments BIM Task Group is “essentially value creating collaboration through the entire life-cycle of an asset – this is underpinned by the creation, collation and exchange of shared 3D models and intelligent, structured data attached to them”.

Embracing 3D Laser Scanning Technology Maltby Surveys have made major investments in both hardware and software to meet the demands for 3D data. Using FARO Focus 3D Laser Scanners we capture, model and deliver parametric models of buildings to assist the construction team in the BIM process. Having accurately controlled and registered the point cloud data rcs files are created for transfer to Autodesk REVIT.

Following approval of the BIM Specification, a model of the building is developed to inform the basis for the design. In the context of BIM, as built models, as opposed to new design models, require a radically different approach. This is where the knowledge and experience of our trained technicians is vital as informed decisions need to be made in the creation and validation of the model.

Building Surveys

Maltby Surveys is one of the country’s leading survey practices in the measurement of buildings. Utilising 3d Laser Scanning or our developed real-time data capture software we can offer the most comprehensive, accurate and economical solution in this field of surveying.

Our surveyors are equipped with the very latest surveying technology allowing for high precision data capture. The result is efficient survey teams, high quality data and increased productivity. All measured surveys of buildings, irrespective of size or complexity, are captured using 3d Terrestrial Laser Scanning. Following the successful scan registration process, all projects are hosted on WebshareCloud which can give the whole design team very early access to spatial data ahead of the specified deliverables. This gives a very clear visual reference of the project and can help with early design decisions as dimensions can be taken and areas measured directly from a web browser.

3d Laser Scanning

The process of collecting 3D coordinates of a given region of an object surface automatically and in a systematic pattern at a high rate of thousands of points per second, achieving the resulting 3D coordinates in near real time.

To facilitate the production of measured Floor Plans, Sections and Elevations Maltby Surveys capture highly detailed 3D information about building structures of all types. We utilise the very latest “cutting edge” technology in the form of 3D high definition terrestrial laser scanners to collect vast amounts of point cloud data which are then processed into 2D drawings or 3D models.  

The non-contact nature and incredible speed of this surveying      technology enables us to undertake survey tasks that were previously prohibitively expensive or indeed practically not even possible.

Rights of Light

To produce a Rights of Light study a 3D model of the existing site and the proposed site must be built. Historically this has been carried out using 2D survey data from the Ordnance Survey and site specific photos.

At Maltby Surveys we have combined our Surveying and CAD skills with the help of the latest High Definition Laser Scanning technology and now have a very efficient and accurate way of both capturing and modelling buildings. The real value in commissioning a detailed and accurate 3d model is in its many other uses including the Elevations and Sections that can be derived directly from it.

Unlike a traditional set of independently measured 2d surveys, you have one model and the 2d data is generated from it. Moreover since the data capture process is comprehensive, additional information can also be gained around the site extents which can be processed at a later date or simply archived for future project requirements.

Control Surveys

Underpinning all of the survey work we do is an accurate control survey framework. Every project large or small relies on the quality of the control survey. GPS receivers are routinely utilised on all surveys to reference each site to the Ordnance Survey National Grid to centimetre accuracy. This framework provides us with baseline data to expand our total station local network. This will involve conventional traverse networks.

Survey markers are established on the ground local for every project. These markers have unique coordinates and provide a mechanism for revisiting previously completed surveys either to supplement with additional survey data or provide the construction team with coordinated datum points ahead of impending construction.

Maltby Surveys resource and train survey staff to be able to carry out high-order control surveys often requiring complex processing of GPS data and rigorous network adjustments. Academic and practical courses are undertaken regularly at recognised approved training centres in order to maintain a high level of continued professional development endorsed by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors.

Topography

For over 35 years Maltby Surveys has been providing high precision survey information to architects, developers, construction companies and associated professions. Whether your site is in acres of roaming pasture or a millimetre critical town centre development we have both equipment and professional expertise to manage, execute and deliver the project.

Site surveys are carried out most commonly prior to an impending development. Once planning has been granted, developers and their architects need detailed survey to confirm site area, levels and dimensions. Utility surveys are often required underpinned by an accurate site survey locating surface inspection covers and manholes.

Maltby Surveys have vast experience in these types of survey and positively encourage their existing client base to communicate and collaborate early in the project. Dimensional verification at the inception stage is essential in order to avoid design errors in construction and negate unnecessary problems with boundary encroachment.

Infrastructure

Maltby Surveys provide highly skilled surveying and engineering staff for any project. Our surveyors benefit from a fundamental understanding of the whole life-cycle of infrastructure construction projects from ground investigation works to final hand over. All our surveyors are multi-skilled with detailed knowledge of CAD software and survey instrumentation to allow them to work accurately and efficiently.

Fully robotic survey instruments allow for one person working enabling rapid setting out. GPS Systems are used to connect survey and setting out positions to National Mapping Datum’s such as Ordnance Survey National Grid. 3D graphical representation of terrain features and buildings is widely delivered as an aid to understanding as well as base data for the design process.

Digital terrain modelling can be presented utilising free client viewing software to allow flybys’ / walk-throughs / general views as well as manipulation of certain modelling conditions to represent different scenarios.

Drone Surveys (UAV)

Maltby Surveys have been using photogrammetric methods for surveying and mapping since 1985. The confidence in data derived from aerial imagery whether that comes from fixed wing aircraft, helicopter, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), comes from the accuracy of the ground control. Maltby Surveys have a long history of establishing high precision ground control to help in the process of ortho photo rectification, heighting and quality assurance.

Modern UAV’s now come equipped with inertial navigation systems and Network RTK GNSS solutions onboard offering the highest levels of positional accuracy which in turn improves the accuracy of the photographic registration. Notwithstanding this accuracy improvement, as geomatics professionals, Maltby Surveys always prove these data sets against conventionally established ground control points. This is carried out utilizing high precision Leica GPS and Total Station equipment. The purpose of this proving exercise is to establish redundant information which serves to corroborate the values derived from the aerial imagery thus providing the client with confidence in the reliability and accuracy of the data.

Hydrography

Hydrography is the science which deals with the measurement and description of the physical features of bodies of water and their littoral land areas.

At Maltby Surveys we support a variety of activities including river profiling, flood risk assessment, port and harbour maintenance (dredging), coastal engineering (beach erosion and replenishment studies), as well as coastal zone management. Water depth is obtained by physically dipping, echo sounding (single or dual frequency) or even Multi-Beam can be deployed to facilitate the mapping of the seabed profile. With our in-house software developers, presentation of such measured data can be specific to client requirements.

Flood Modeller / HecRAS / Mike11 / TuFlow and EACSDF are all examples of existing outputs currently available. We have further integrated the requirements of the EACSDF Version 3.33 which has been developed as a standard format to allow for smoother integration between surveyor and modeller. Much of the structure and conveyance information is input by the surveyor and automatically populates the Flood Modeller dataset.

Channel Surveys

One the oldest disciplines that Maltby Surveys has been involved with is the measurement of profiles of inland waterways. Utilising software developed in-house over many years, we have pioneered the use of total stations in the capture of cross section data. GPS derived spatial data can now also be incorporated. Since the early 1980s we have delivered detailed survey reports and data to the Environment Agency, Consulting Engineers and River Modellers. In recent years Maltby Surveys have been working in Ireland with the Office of Public Works providing them and their modelling consultants with cross section data for the catchments of both River Lee (Co.Cork) and River Suir (Co.Tipperary to Waterford). The key to our success in this field is our unique ability to adapt our procedures and continually improve the way we assess, capture, verify and deliver the data. Our developed Quality Assurance processes allows us to minimise errors and ensure a consistent high standard of output.

Floodplains

It is now commonplace for floodplain sections to be produced at client specified locations. Utilising our extensive GPS capability we our able to carry out this work in real time. This real-time approach allows us to precisely locate where sections fall and instantly report any discrepancies with the original mapping. Photogrammetric survey data gathered using the Drone / Lidar methods can all be supplemented or corroborated using high precision GPS / Total station combination. Data is captured and processed by professional surveyors with a wealth of experience in this field. All surveyors involved in this work have attended the course on “Surveying for Modellers” developed and presented by JBA Consulting. This collaborative approach has been commended by the Environment Agency. Richard Maltby (Director) – Manages both Warwick and Yorkshire Offices and oversees all hydrographic work. He maintains our high standards of survey and delivery across this discipline.

Coastal & Harbour Surveys

We have developed systems to utilise the latest technology and software to produce digital data in the required format for direct input into the majority of modelling packages. The survey project may require equipment such as a Multi-beam swathe scanner, single or dual frequency echo sounders all of which can be fixed on vessels ranging from our 12ft Dory to our 4ft remote control boat.

Maltby Surveys work in partnership with Shoreline Surveys in order to offer the complete range of Coastal & Harbour Surveying Services. Our equipment includes Road transportable Category 3 commercial 6.5m shallow draft survey vessel, CMAX side scan sonar – 325 & 785 khz, Valeport tide gauges and current meters, Reson echo sounders, Geometric G881Magnetometers, Coda Geophysical Instruments. Our clients include Port & Harbour Authorities, Dredging Contractors, Marine Civil Engineers, Government Agencies, Environmental Consultants. Services include Side Scan Sonar, Multibeam, Shallow Geophysical Investigations, Bed Sampling, Positioning as well as Safety boat supply.

Environment Agency

We have carried out hundreds of river channel and topographic site surveys for the Environment Agency and its predecessor bodies, Thames Water and the National Rivers Authority, on a regular basis since 1985. We were involved in the early development of the Agency’s EACSD format for river channel survey data, which is intended to be a standard interface between surveying and flood modelling systems and includes provisions for structures and conveyance estimation.

The Environment Agency are users of our developed RXS software to convert, verify and validate the work of their sub-contractors. Stephen Maltby (Director) started his surveying career with Thames Water and is key to the successful relationship that has developed ensuring that all surveys are carried out within the strict boundaries of the Environment Agency Specification.
